Undergraduate Medical Education

prospective student meets with university officialOur Family Medicine & Community Health Division of Medical Student Education warmly welcomes you.

We feel a great sense of pride in our outstanding medical students, and we strive to provide a high-quality and engaging curriculum in family medicine and community health. Many of our faculty members are involved in medical education and, as a team, we delight in contributing to our students' education throughout their four years.

The University of Kansas School of Medicine has proudly graduated about 18% of its students into a family medicine residency program annually over the past three years and consistently ranks in the top 5 U.S. medical schools for contributions to the family medicine workforce. In 2021, U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top ten for primary care and in the top 20 for family medicine in particular.

Our department leads the way in ACE curriculum faculty involvement, with one faculty society director and ten assistant directors.

Our commitment to student education begins in years one and two with the leadership of problem-based learning groups, capstone teaching, and mentoring.

In the third year, we offer an 8-week clerkship in which students have the opportunity to experience either rural family medicine or urban academic family medicine.

In the fourth year, our department offers several elective experiences, including a sub-internship, experiences in sports medicine, community medicine and research. Away rotations may not always be available during public health emergencies.

Finally, innovation in medical education is of great interest to us. We believe in the power of team-based care, and show commitment to this through our Team-Based Teaching Clinic (IPTC). We hope to teach our students the importance of social factors that influence the health of our patients. We accomplish this through facilitating experiences that give our patients and their families context, such as panel management, home visits, and open discussion about underlying issues of equity as they relate to health.

We look forward to meeting you and talking to you about our passion for Family Medicine!
