Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

A group of people locking hands in a circleThe Department of Family Medicine & Community Health is committed to promoting diverse, inclusive communities. We recognize that social and economic opportunity plays an important role in health and that unconscious biases can affect the manner and quality of care we provide. We strive for inclusion in our faculty and professional development and aim to develop physician leaders who work to identify and eliminate health disparities.

Our department's Diversity Committee meets regularly to focus on issues of equity and inclusion. Our faculty and staff members lead and participate in events throughout the campus that aim to generate important discussions about these topics. Many of our faculty members also have leadership roles in the university's efforts to support diversity, inclusion and gender equity.

Diversity Committee Purpose Statement

The purpose of the Diversity Committee is to develop strategies that emphasize diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts aimed at improving patient care, education, faculty and staff development, and research.

Our priorities include:

  • Recruitment of a diverse workforce including faculty, residents, fellows and staff to be reflective of the community we serve.
  • Retention of new and existing residents, faculty and staff by supporting career advancement and the promotion process.
  • Recognition of department members engaging in DEI efforts by highlighting their work.
  • Research, adopting an anti-racist research framework.

Education, training and communication: centered around structural competence and promotion of equity and empowerment of all marginalized individuals, targeting all levels of learners, faculty and staff.

We also oversee nominations and final decisions for the department's annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Awards.
