Temporary Coverage services help address the shortage of physicians in rural and underserved areas by connecting providers with rural and underserved Kansas health care employers that need temporary medical coverage.

Rural Health Education and Services manages the:

Kansas Locum Tenens (KLT) program
The KLT program utilizes Kansas resident physicians, fellows, and faculty from all University of Kansas School of Medicine campuses. KLT offers coverage for primary care.

Kansas Locum Tenens Plus (KLT+) program
The KLT+ program utilizes practicing providers, including primary care and specialty physicians, advanced practice providers (PAs, APRNs), nurses, and other health care providers to fill coverage needs.

Temporary Coverage provides:

  • Coverage for a physician who needs time off for personal or professional reasons.
  • The means to strengthen and expand the rural components of residency and fellowship programs and the perspectives of the academic faculty.
  • Supplemental income for a KU resident physician/fellow by earning competitive, fair market pay for service while still in training.
  • A great recruitment resource for rural health care organizations.
